How to manage it
Grow only in frost-free sites; plant on a mound or slope for sharp drainage and mulch heavily over the shallow roots. Mexican-race types are the hardiest.
Watch out for
Frost-tender and very prone to root rot (Phytophthora) without sharp drainage. Type A and B flowering - plant both types for good fruit set. Shallow-rooted and brittle in wind. Fruit and leaves are toxic to horses, birds and many pets.
